My Kitchen Makeover: White Painted Cabinets

Hi all! I am super excited to share this post with you all!

For years I've been dreaming of having white painted cabinets in my kitchen. I finally did it and now I LOVE MY NEW KITCHEN!

It's so light, bright and clean looking and I love that!

Here are the before photos:

and this here is what my kitchen looks like now:

I hired a professional to spray the doors and I painted all the rest in Farmhouse Paint in Creamy Linen color. We color matched the creamy linen color for the doors and cabinet faces. I would have preferred to hire the entire thing out and have everything sprayed, but it was a bit too expensive, so I chose to go this route.

Because I wanted a cleaner look in my kitchen, and we weren't changing our backsplash, I had my husband cut a board that fits perfectly inside the square tile area behind my cooktop. I painted it with chalkboard paint and then I painted the established year on it. This is the year that my husband and I got married.

The island lights are from Lowes. The barstools are from Pier One. (You can find the links at the bottom of this post.) I totally lucked out on the bar stools. I found 2 that had some damage on them and I got them for more than 75% off!! I was so super excited about this deal!

Those adorable large mason jars on the counter are from Walmart. I filled them with flour, sugar and powdered sugar. I love the look of these!!

The topiary is from Ikea.

I also made the "As for me and my house, we will serve the Lord" sign.

I may still add a burlap roman style curtain.

It's amazing what some paint, new bar stools and light fixtures can do to change the look of a space.

I love. love. love the new look in my kitchen! The brightness just makes me happy and this kitchen is definitely more me!

Dresser Redo

In honor of welcoming our second boy into this world (Atlas Frey, born on January 9th), I felt it was appropriate to share the dresser I refurbished for his nursery. I wanted to find something that would double as a changing table so I was excited when I found this piece for 30 dollars.

Here's the before photo:

I was itching to try Annie Sloan Chalk Paint so I picked up a container of Pure White and got to work. My vision for the nursery was light, airy colors. I applied three coats of paint and loved how stark white it turned out. I used the Annie Sloan Clear Wax and applied it on the dresser with a lint free cloth. I still need a little practice with the wax (or maybe I need to buy the brush) because there were some spots that were a little tacky. I believe it will be tacky if you use too much wax in one area.

I picked up some new hardware from Hobby Lobby while they were 50% off to give it an updated look.

This was a very easy and fun project!

Laundry Room Facelift

We’ve been in our house for 16 years now, and our laundry room cabinets had seen their better days.

On New Year’s Eve, we decided to start our makeover. First of all, for those of us who do home improvement projects on New Year’s Eve, realize that Lowe’s and Home Depot close at 6:00 on that day. Second of all, if you like to start a project and finish it immediately like I do, don’t rip apart your laundry room with a “vision” until you’ve checked to see if stores actually carry what it takes to achieve that vision!

We realized quickly that those stores don’t stock the items I was hoping to use. At that point my husband said I could special order them. Well, my laundry room was already torn apart, and I decided I wasn’t up for weeks of a mess, I would just find something locally and be happy with it. Though it is not what my initial plan was, I am still very pleased.

This was the laundry room before we started:

Sorry for the lighting in the pictures. I quickly snapped these with my phone before my husband started demo. I need to learn to use my nice camera for project pictures. Sometimes it is too easy to just grab your phone.

Fresh paint and cabinets, a bar to hang some things to dry, a couple of shelves with storage boxes, and a few accent pieces and this is what we finished with. (And yes, I need a footstool, though I did before as well.)

This picture was hanging in the laundry room before the makeover and I couldn’t bear to get rid of it. It is pretty much my happy place ~ a nice farmer’s porch with a comfy place to lounge while looking at the ocean. I can do laundry and dream of being there :)

It feels nice to start the New Year with a fresh, clean laundry room!

Here is a recipe for homemade fabric softener that I really like. I feel like it really does make everything so fluffy and soft. Hope you enjoy it as well!

In a LARGE bowl, dump 1 cup of baking soda. Very slowly and carefully, one cup at a time, add 6 cups of white vinegar, stirring until dissolved. Stir your scent booster mixture in and put into a container that will allow for easy pouring. I use an old orange juice bottle, and it’s perfect!

Table Redo (Contributor Post)

Last year, I bought a matching table and hutch from a yard sale for eighty dollars. I knew it had potential and I couldn't wait to refinish it. We were living in a rental house at the time and we didn't have adequate space to work on projects. Every time I brought up the daunting task, my husband would say, "Lets just wait until we have a house with a garage". Well, we ended up needing to leave the rental house sooner than we had anticipated and instead of renting again, we decided to build a small starter home with a one car garage. Little did Tyler know just how many projects I had planned for us once we had that little garage and no excuses... (I can see him shaking his head right now). Once we got into our house, this was one of the first projects I wanted to start on.

I browsed Pinterest to gather insight on the best methods for my table overhaul. My vision was a dark table top with rustic cream chairs and legs. My inspiration came from this blogger's table redo, and I followed her steps with a few modifications (or mess ups) along the way.

To say this project went smoothly would be lying, but I did learn a lot in the process. (And that has to count for something, right?) To begin, I used a random orbital sander to strip the stain from the table top. I know from previous experience that in order for stain to take evenly, it is essential to sand until there is absolutely no stain left in the wood.

My husband stained the table top with two coats of Miniwax Dark Walnut. We then applied two coats of Miniwax Polycrylic (water based, satin finish.) I thought buying an electric paint sprayer for the chairs and legs would be the easiest option. The primer came out uneven and bubbly, but dried smooth. We should've stopped at this point, but I was in a hurry and I figured the paint would dry smooth too. That wasn't the case and we were left with four bubbled, and what I thought to be ruined, chairs. We spent hours sanding them down and there may have been a few tears involved in this process (it's never a good idea to do big projects while pregnant). My brother, who is a painter for a construction company, came over and resprayed them with his professional sprayer. Once it dried, I went over the chairs and legs one more time with a paint brush to get any missed spots. Originally I had wanted to add dark brown water based stain to all the spindles and legs for a rustic look. I didn't love the way it turned out when I tried it on one leg, so I left it clean and simple. Overall, I learned with this project that you will not always create exactly what you had envisioned. Sometimes it can evolve into it's own style and that's the beauty of DIY projects. I love the bright, fresh look it brings to my kitchen!

Laundry Room, Craft Room, Office All in One Makeover

Hello! Hope you are well.

My sister and her family moved into a (new to them) house back in September and she had asked me to fly out and help her get organized, so last month I was finally able to do that.

We accomplished a ton in the short time I was there...

The first thing I want to show you is her laundry room. It had to serve as a laundry room, but it also had to serve as a craft area and an office, all in that one space.

So (over the phone and via emails, etc.) my sister and I came up with a plan and our brother built some shelving and a new desk too. My sister went and did her shopping (with a list that I helped her come up with) before I arrived. As soon as I got there, we went to work organizing!

We created a craft/office closet all together.

I LOVE transformations like this and I LOVE the challenge of creating them too.
